Why Give?

In September of 2020, our church celebrated its 235th birthday.

This important milestone causes us to look at who we are at present, and to imagine what “being church” will look like in the future. It is a clear trend in our evolving society that church is not on the minds of many.

Millennials are leaving religion altogether, statistics tell us. Yet, we know that eventually people want relationships and transcendence; to be part of something bigger than themselves. Churches offer a way to tend to our spirits and create a sense of community, and it is important that they continue to be part of a healthy society.

Community

We do not want to exist just for our own good. We aim to contribute to the community we live in.

Striving to bring joy through:

    • Bell Choir Performances
    • Harvest Fair
    • Contra Dances
    • Free Children’s Summer Music Camp
    • Free movies at the Opera House

Bringing in programs like:

    • Caregiver and Bereavement Support Groups
    • Bereavement Support Group
    • Community String Band

Supporting community:

    • Rides through our Shepherd program for those who have challenges getting to medical appointments
    • Volunteering at and support for the Food Pantry

Providing space in this historic building:

    • The Girl Scouts, the Hazel MacBrien Nursery School, and Community String Band find a home here
    • Other organizations/individuals can use our large Fellowship Hall, equipped with a full-service kitchen, tables, chairs and big screen smart TV

We know we have to move forward with wisdom, prudence and faith. We are striving to build a long-term sustainable income source so we can continue to be alive and active in our community for the next 235 years.

History

Gathered in 1785, our church held its first services on the site that is now Lovell Lake Cemetery.

In 1831, a beautiful church was built at the present location at Wakefield Corner, patterned after an ancient church in England.

However, it was struck by lightning in 1956 and burned to the ground. The present building opened its doors in 1958 and in 2001 an addition was added for classrooms, a new kitchen, and Parish Helpers room  It was also made handicap accessible.
